Fontana kicks off the season in style with a FREE concert in downtown Kalamazoo’s beautiful Bronson Park featuring Kalamazoo native Gene Knific!
Pianist, composer, arranger and executive producer Gene Knific is the recipient of four DownBeat Student Music Awards. Gene studies at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music pursuing degrees in jazz performance and composition, where he studies with Shelly Berg and Martin Bejerano.
Originally from Kalamazoo, Knific studied throughout his high school career at Western Michigan University with distinguished professors such as pianists Lori Sims and Tad Weed.
In his own words
Knific has performed all over the world with an extensive and diverse repertoire. When asked to describe himself, Knific explained that he’s an “eclectic musician and composer and wants to stretch myself to feature as many of my abilities as possible.”
At the end of the day, he’s always looking “to bridge gaps between different styles of music that I enjoy listening to and playing… and to open up the listeners’ minds to music that they might not initially like or know much about.”
2014 Community Arts Awards
As a special treat during the performance, we will be joined by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo to celebrate the recipients of the 2014 Community Arts Awards.
The Community Arts Awards recognize, validate and celebrate the people, programs and organizations that positively impact the Kalamazoo Community in and through the Arts. If you’d like to nominate someone, please visit the Arts Council website by Friday, June 13, 2014!
Join us for a fun day out in Bronson park with great food, a celebration of our arts community, and locally grown jazz talent!
