Fontana names Bradley Wong Director

We are thrilled to announce Bradley Wong, former Director of the School of Music at Western Michigan University, as our new Director.

Wong replaces Interim Director Daniel Gustin and succeeds long-time Director David Baldwin. Baldwin stepped down from his duties early this year because of a serious illness. Wong will join Fontana on May 1, 2022.

“All of us at Fontana thank David Baldwin for his years of providing one-of-a-kind musical experiences with artists of the highest international caliber,” said Chris Shook, President of the Fontana Board of Directors. Baldwin joined Fontana in 2013.

“We are so pleased to welcome Brad Wong as Director of Fontana,” said Shook. “Brad’s impeccable and wide-ranging credentials are stellar in the arts and arts management community. His appointment brings a tremendously fortunate amalgamation of experience and knowledge to Fontana to continue the highest level of performance that has been the hallmark of its mission.”

Prior to his retirement from WMU in 2020 following a six-year term as Director of the School of Music, Wong was professor of clarinet and a member of one of the school’s resident faculty ensembles. He also served as the Coordinator of Graduate Studies for the School of Music.

Wong has performed internationally and throughout the United States including at Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress. He spent 25 years as principal clarinetist with the Southwest Michigan Symphony and has performed with the Detroit and Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestras, and as soloist with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra.

“Fontana has played a significant role in my life for almost 40 years as performer, collaborator, and audience member,” said Wong. “I am humbled and honored to continue David Baldwin’s artistic vision and the mission of the organization— to enrich our community through the creation and performance of world-class chamber music.”
